At least 13 individuals killed and 98 hurt in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the pace and management of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.

The accident happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The official stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to speak with those impacted.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone public works project of the previous administration, whose term concluded the year before. This venture was a hallmark of his government's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable expansion of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an accelerated rate, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This includes an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced a couple of non-lethal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an urgent pause in the development and management of all such projects.

This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."

In reaction, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all security protocols. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
