Weather balloons transporting numerous packages of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was forced to close for an extended period when multiple of them floated into the country's airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two of which ending up precisely above the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and adjacent to the frontier with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
At least 11 balloons containing numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have since been recovered, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
Since January, 544 balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been documented the previous year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has registered in excess of 100 cases in which illegal goods were transported from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
Smuggling Techniques
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that this activity become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have created aviation problems across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
