Users Stopping Slimming Injections Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management involves ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis reveals that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a major medical journal points out that while overweight people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the weight returns at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.

"Users using such drugs must be aware of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy concludes," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The study, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the results of these new drugs with conventional dieting.

Scientists point out that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a more gradual weight regain—perhaps 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

Explaining the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than normal might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is uncontrolled, making binge eating far more likely."

A Lifelong Disease?

The NHS suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the high risk of relapse, the treatment might need to be ongoing.

This opinion is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.

User Testimonies

Users who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described a patient.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Use

Figures suggest that a significant number of adults in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Use is higher among women than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent cure and lasting health benefits relies on integrated behavioural support.
